Type: 420 stainless steel is a martensitic stainless steel with hardenable properties.
Implementation standards: AISI, ASTM, etc.
Chemical Composition
Carbon (C): The content is between 0.16%-0.25%. A higher carbon content can make stainless steel obtain higher hardness and strength, but it has a certain effect on corrosion resistance.
Chromium (Cr): The chromium content is usually around 12%-14%, which can form a dense chromium oxide protective film on the steel surface, giving the steel good corrosion resistance.
Manganese (Mn): Generally around 1.00%, which helps to improve the strength of steel and improve processing performance.
Silicon (Si): The content does not exceed 1.00%, mainly acting as a deoxidizer, and can also increase the strength of steel to a certain extent.
Phosphorus (P): The content is usually controlled below 0.040%. Excessive phosphorus will reduce the toughness and corrosion resistance of steel.
Sulfur (S): The content generally does not exceed 0.030%. Sulfur will form sulfide inclusions in steel, which has a certain impact on the quality and performance of the steel.

Performance characteristics
Mechanical properties
High strength and high hardness: After quenching and tempering, the tensile strength can reach more than 600MPa, and the hardness can reach about HRC40-50, which is suitable for manufacturing parts that require high hardness and high strength.
Certain toughness: While having high strength and hardness, it also has certain toughness and can withstand a certain degree of impact load, but the toughness is relatively poor compared to austenitic stainless steel.
Corrosion resistance: It has good corrosion resistance in atmospheric environment, can resist general oxidation and mild corrosion, and has good resistance to water, steam, fresh water, mine water, carbonic acid, etc. However, in some highly corrosive media such as strong acid, strong alkali, seawater and other environments, the corrosion resistance is relatively weak.
Magnetism: As a martensitic stainless steel, 420 has a ferromagnetic crystal structure, can be magnetized in the annealed and hardened state, and is suitable for magnetic clamping.
Hot working performance: good hot working performance, wide forging and rolling temperature range, but slow cooling is required after hot working to avoid stress cracks.
Cold working performance: obvious tendency of cold working hardening, appropriate intermediate annealing is required during cold deformation to eliminate work hardening and restore the plasticity and toughness of steel.
Welding performance: relatively poor welding performance, heat affected zone is prone to hardening and cracking during welding, special welding process measures are required, such as preheating, control of welding parameters, post-weld heat treatment, etc., to ensure the quality of welded joints.
